LILLY
I sit on the edge of a small cot that's covered by crumpled brown sheets, in a windowless room. My skin still smarts from the force of the water jets that hit me as I stood inside the white pod bracing myself on the smooth walls. But I'm clean, at least. One of the two guys left me clothes on the bed; the pants are smaller than I expectedâtoo small to be Rux'sâbut they work if I roll them up. The grey shirt that almost reaches my knees fastens with something like Velcro, and as I press this together, the material immediately bonds and the fastenings disappear. Undressing may be confusing.
Do I dare to lie down and risk napping?
Somebody stomps up the small concrete-style stairs between the upstairs and downstairs room in the house and the door swings open.
Knocking isn't a custom here, then?
I stand as Dev walks into the roomâheâs still shirtless. I moisten my lips and the colours in his eyes darken to what I've decided is his blue alien smolder and he's in front of me in one stride. I take a sharp breath as my face almost meets his chest.
"What is this?" I ask and place my hand on his strange symbol. "Why do I have one?"
And why am I asking, when he has no clue what I'm saying? Dev gently places his fingers on my shirt, over the place the mark sits on my skin. "No rippingâoh!" The shirt splits open close to the top as he draws a line down with his finger. He focuses on the action, before stopping his fingertips just below my ribcage.
I discarded my underwear in the 'too icky to wear' pile in the corner, which gives him a bigger eyeful than last time he exposed me. And his focus suddenly isn't on the mark.
Quelle surprise.
"Ruso," he says, voice rough. Massive hands engulf my face and the alien smolder intensifies.
Drawing the shirt back around myself, I step back and his hands fall from my face as I glower at him. âI donât know your customs, but randomly tearing a girlâs clothes isnât a human thing.â He blinks at me, eyes swirling blue. âWhy did you do that?â I point towards the door. âIn that⦠place.â
Dev likely has no idea what Iâm saying, but my stress from the last few nightmare hours catches up.
âDo you know how humiliating that was?â I continue voice rising and his eyes widening more the louder I get. Making some gestures, hopefully to recreate the moment so he understands, I pause and clamp my jaw together as my eyes well.
He places a hand on the silver mark adorning my chest. âRuhr ma.â The words come quietly and he then cups my cheek, speaking other soft words before repeating the same one. Is he apologizing?
Devâs focus drives something different to anger through me; something more than the unexplained attraction to this alien. Thereâs more than regret in his expression, or frustration that he canât explain to me what happened, but also a hurt as he touches and strokes my face.
